How I Made a Colorful Puff Bag for Summer Sewing

Why a Puff Bag is the Perfect Summer Project

Hi friends, Ever since QuiltCon earlier this year, I couldn’t stop thinking about the adorable puff bag I saw from my friend @Sweetpotatoquilts. It was the perfect mix of playful, cozy, and functional—a project that brings joy in both the making and the using.

Summer sewing often feels like a time to slow down and pick up projects that let us play with color and texture without rushing, and this puff bag turned out to be exactly that.

Puffing, Piecing, and Tying: The Making of the Bag

For this puff bag, I cut my top squares at 3.5" and 3" for the back. The finished size came out to about 18 inches across, which I love for a roomy, everyday bag. You can make the straps any size you want. I just used my Stellar Tote Pattern as the base and tweaked it for the puff construction.

Ready to Sew Your Own Puff Bag?

If you’ve seen my recent reels, you’ve caught glimpses of how this puff bag came together. From piecing colorful squares to stuffing each puff and tying them off with sweet floss ties, every step felt like a little celebration. Each puff is like a tiny burst of joy, and watching them come together into a beautiful, usable bag made me fall in love with slow sewing all over again.

If you’re looking for a fun, low-pressure summer sewing project, I highly recommend trying a puff bag. It’s beginner-friendly, a great way to play with bold prints, and you’ll end up with a bag you’ll love to use. Christina from @Sweetpotatoquilts has a fantastic step-by-step tutorial on her site here.

And if you want another sweet summer project, be sure to check out the adorable 🍓 pouch tutorial by SuzyQuilts. It’s a quick, fun make that pairs beautifully with the puff bag for your summer outings. I hope this inspires you to add a pop of color to your sewing room this season.
